Water: Facts about Israeli and Palestinian Use, Agreements

Israel is in full compliance with the terms for water use and supply as outlined in the Oslo II peace process and delineated in the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement. In fact, Israel provides 30 percent more water to the Palestinians than required, with the total amount of water available to them exceeding agreed-upon terms.

When Israel first gained control of the West Bank in 1967, just four of the 708 Palestinian towns and villages could access running water. Now, 641 of those areas – and more than 96 percent of the Palestinian population – have access to running water. Israel’s network of pipes boosted water supply for Palestinians from 64 million cubic meters (MCM) per year to 120 MCM per year. Despite Palestinian claims, there is almost no difference in the amount of water Israelis and Palestinians use. As of 2012, per capita water use is 150 MCM for Israelis and 140 MCM for Palestinians.

In 2000, the media published a photo of Tuvia Grossman, a Jewish student from Chicago -- bloodied and battered -- crouching beneath a club-wielding Israeli policeman. The caption identified him as a Palestinian victim of Israeli brutality -- with the clear implication that the Israeli soldier was the one who beat him. In fact, the policeman saved his life.

A Jewish settler resists Israeli riot police enforcing a Supreme Court order to demolish nine homes in an outpost of the Amona settlement. Residents joined by thousands of other protesters raised barbed wire barriers to protect the houses and clashed violently with police. Over 200 people were injured, including 80 policemen. Following hours of confrontation, the settlers were dragged away and bulldozers moved in to begin the demolition.

Last Week Alone: 32,322 Tons of Good and Gas Entered Gaza


In spite of what Israel receives from the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip on a near-daily basis which includes rocket fire, mortar shells and terrified citizens. Israel however, responds with thousands of trucks containing shipments of civilian goods and humanitarian aid.

Overall, 1,182 truckloads carrying 32,332 tons of civilian goods were unloaded at the crossings between January 22nd and January 28th. Israel strives to allow normal civilian life in Gaza and through mutual agreements and cooperation, has succeeded in substantially reducing the unemployment rate to 25%, the lowest rate in a decade; as reported by the Palestinian Authority’s Central Bureau of Statistics.

Ending violent international conflicts requires understanding the causal factors that perpetuate them. In the Israeli–Palestinian conflict, Israelis and Palestinians each tend to see themselves as victims, engaging in violence only in response to attacks initiated by a fundamentally and implacably violent foe bent on their destruction. Econometric techniques allow us to empirically test the degree to which violence on each side occurs in response to aggression by the other side.

20-летняя Ширин Шлиан, жительница одной из арабских деревень на севере Израиля, служит в ЦАХАЛе. Своим примером она хочет сподвигнуть на службу в израильской армии арабскую молодежь страны.

Двое братьев Ширин тоже служат в ЦАХАЛе, причем один из них уже получил звание майора. «И арабы, и евреи часто спрашивают меня, зачем я пошла служить, — рассказывает Ширин. — Узнав, что я арабка, многие евреи удивляются, зачем мне это нужно… Должно быть, дело в хорошем воспитании, которое я получила в семье».


Несколько месяцев назад Ширин прошла курсы по подготовке молодых инструкторов. FACT SHEET: PALESTINIAN UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE (UDI)

Israelis and many Palestinians long for peaceful coexistence, but Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas’ unilateral plan to ask the UN to recognize a Palestinian state on the 1949 armistice lines (UDI) will undermine hopes for peace and establish dangerous international precedents. A durable peace can emerge only through direct negotiations, not unilateral declarations. Since fall 2010, President Abbas has refused to resume direct negotiations with Israel and has actively abandoned negotiations altogether. Instead, he has asked other nations to recognize an independent Palestinian state with borders on the 1949 armistice lines. In September 2011, he plans to bring the demand for UDI to the UN.

International Positions on UDI

U.S. officials and Congress have denounced UDI. In a unanimously approved resolution, the U.S. House of Representatives underscored that “true and lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians can only be achieved through direct negotiations between the parties” and urged other nations to reject the Palestinians’ appeal.¹

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said on January 19, 2011, “We're working to keep the focus where we think it needs to be [direct negotiations] and that is not in New York.”²

Key European countries, such as Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, the Baltic states, and other eastern European nations also oppose UDI.³

139,678 tons of goods entered Gaza in December

Monthly crossing report shows that 4,373 trucks entered Gaza Strip from Israel in December

During the month of December, 4,373 trucks carrying 139,678 tons of goods entered the Gaza Strip from Israel through the Kerem Shalom crossing.

Of the trucks, 1,242 were carrying food, 1,218 were carrying construction materials, 148 were carrying agricultural inputs, 63 were carrying clothes and footwear, 137 were carrying electric products, and 281 were carrying ceramics and plumbing. Transportation of cooking gas into the Gaza Strip continued with 3,446 tons.
